You’re walking under the eaves of the mallorn sentinel-trees, the silence around you is deafening as you approach a clearing to find a something unusual. You see an ancient mirror, covered in rich engravings and full of steaming water; a quiet mesmerizing hum comes from within. As you peer into its depths, you see a strange and wonderful vision. What do you see? The great feats of Beren and Lúthien, of Húrin, of Tuor and of Eärendil are distant legends, and the Free Peoples are under threat. Sauron was destroyed at the end of the War of the Last Alliance, or so it was thought. After two millennia of respite, dark forces have taken root again, and the Free Peoples are weakening. The Elves of the Woodland Realm and Lothlórien have come under attack from the fortress of Dol Guldur, once thought abandoned. Orcs have entered the realm of Khazad-dûm and are fighting with every ounce of their worth to wrest Durin's kingdom hall by hall. Orcs from Mount Gram are harassing the Greenfields of the Shire and wargs have come down from the mountains. The Witch-Realm of Angmar has been destroyed, but the Men of Gondor and the Elves of Lindon were unable to save Arthedain or their capital of Fornost, and the last holdout of old Arnor is fallen. Worse yet, the Ringwraiths have returned in force and retaken the dread land of Mordor from a sickening Gondor. As forces mass on either side, it is only a matter of time before the hard-won peace is shattered and war again consumes Middle-Earth. The Wizards are far afield, and the Heroes are off on distant adventures, so it falls to the ordinary people of the West to secure their lands from evil and to ensure a future for Elves, Men, Dwarves and Hobbits.
